          5. He was born in 1928 in Paris, France, to Russian immigrant parents. Shortly after Elliott's birth, his family moved to Italy, where they spent the next 10 years. They then fled fascism and immigrated to the United States, making Elliott an American thanks to Benito Mussolini and his regime.

          It was in America that Elliott became interested in photography.

          He took his first photographs at the age of 14 and later decided to pursue photography as a career. He studied at Los Angeles City College and later at the New School for Social Research, graduating in 1950.

          The early years in the United States were a serious challenge for Elliott's family – they had to endure poverty and despair, and eventually his parents separated.
